622 billion tons of new ice

The surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet has gained 622 billion tons of new ice and snow since September 1. This is the most in at least eight years, and is far above the the 1981-2010 average.

The graph says “surface mass balance”. I take that to mean surface of the land ice mass balance, i.e. net gain on the surface of the island. That would be snow on top minus melt water flowing out from the bottom. I don’t know how you would measure the surface of the ice rather than the surface of the land. Do you pick an arbitrary point and call it the surface, and judge everything from that point ( in space, so to speak)? And it changes every year? Or do you measure from the land surface and add and subtract inflows and outflows?

I’m sure this will be all over the evening news and headlines in the papers…any day now…

Democrat congressman from Georgia, Hank Johnson, just held a press conference on this subject. congressman Johnson is concerned that all this new ice and snow in Greenland might cause that Island to tip over. stay tuned for further details. lol

    • Ivan G Wainwright says:

Are you fair-dinkum? (Australian slang). This sounds like a warmed-over version of Johnson’s question years ago about Guam tipping over due to the weight of American aircraft etc. on the island.

Thanks for pointing out the increase in the ice mass balance. I stopped paying attention back in February when the totals were pretty run of the mill, which surprised me, as I expected higher totals.

I expected higher totals because the Atlantic has been warmer than usual, which should make the air more moist, which should increase snowfall over Greenland, which should increase the ice mass balance. And this did happen. But it took its sweet time.

The Alarmists don’t want to look at the Atlantic warming because it seems to have happened down deep. Any bounce-back radiation due to CO2 would only involve the surface waters, at least at first. So this warming had a different source. Alarmists don’t like to admit there can be any source other than CO2.

We need to fund more study of thermohaline circulation, as Dr. Bill Gray desired thirty years ago, and the numbskull Al Gore de-funded. The changes we see occurring in Sea Surface temperatures need to be better understood. In terms of our oceans, we are at a level of development much like meteorologist were at when they first started using weather balloons. They discovered a three dimensional way of seeing the atmosphere, involving jet streams and upper air ridges and troughs and other subtleties. We need to develop our understanding the same way, concerning or oceans.

We might even need to develop a three dimensional way of seeing the magma of the earth itself. Its movement is slower but it too is fluid. The might of the sun may cycle through the air, water and earth of our planet, leading to phenomenon associated with the sunspot cycle.

The science is certainly NOT settled.

      Here’s some “settled” science…

All matter contains heat, down to the theoretical temp {-459°F} of “absolute zero” {zero molecular activity}.

Energy production is simply the management/control of heat transfer.

Earth absorbs heat from the Sun during daylight and radiates heat into space/atmosphere during night.

Turn off the heater {Sun} and We have eight minutes…tops…

      Absolutely.

      • Denis Rushworth says:

“Earth absorbs heat from the Sun during daylight and radiates heat into space/atmosphere during night.”

The Earth also radiates heat into space during daytime. Such radiation is somewhat more than at night because of the heating of surfaces caused by sunlight. At night, such radiation continues but at lower levels than during the day.

Now add Hunga Tonga water where the upper atmosphere is bringing itself back to normal…and that is a YUGE lot of water!

    Has sea level dropped?

    • Francis Barnett says:

      Assuming that:-
622 billion tons of ice gives the same mass in fresh water that is,
633.4 cubic kilometres of water removed from the atmosphere/ sea/river/lakes according to conversion.org & omnicalculator.com.
      That’s a lot of water.
More than my two daughters use per year on showers and baths – maybe !!
